softbodies and fabric sculptures
During the lockdown period in the UK I have found it difficult to access a kiln to fire my ceramic works, therefore I began to explore the possibilities of using fabric to create sculpture. I had no access to a sewing machine and as a result all my ‘softbody’ works are handstitched. Spending time creating the pieces was similar to clay building and I found I needed to have discipline and patience to finish the work properly.
I wanted to create as little impact on the environment as possible when creating this body of work and decided to only use recycled fabric on the exterior and discarded shredded plastic to stuff the pieces.
I very much enjoyed the contrast between the clay and fabric and felt that their interaction and relationship with was interesting and created more of a diverse selection of artefacts within my built environments.
